Ocean Beach, San Diego – Our California Soul Spot

Ocean Beach (or OB, as the locals call it) in San Diego is a gem that instantly stole our hearts. It’s home to one of the best dog beaches in California, a legendary Wednesday night farmer’s market, sweet surf, and all the grungy, skatey, salty Cali vibes you could ever want.

We kicked off our San Diego adventure here back in February and were immediately stoked by the walkability, the beach access, and the constant hum of surf and skate culture. OB just feels good.

Morning Vibes at Dog Beach

A typical OB morning? Walks with Molly to Dog Beach—our absolute favorite. If your pup loves water, running, and meeting furry friends, Dog Beach is the spot. At any time of day, you’ll find a playful, diverse crowd of dogs doing zoomies in the sand and splashing in the waves. We even threw Molly’s 9th birthday “pawty” here! We set up a little table with snacks for the humans while the pups tore it up in the surf. Just be sure to pick up after your dog—keep OB beautiful!

OB’s Iconic Wednesday Night Farmers Market

One of the best local events? The Wednesday night farmer’s market on Newport Avenue. With over 50 vendors, you’ll find everything from fresh-squeezed juice and CBD dog treats to mac n’ cheese tacos, Brazilian coxinhas, handmade jewelry, thrifted finds, and all the tie-dye you never knew you needed. Bring a reusable bag, some cash or card, and come hungry!

As the sun dips, the market scene gets even better—head down to the beach end of Newport and you’ll find a drum circle and dancing. Bring your own drum and jump in. The energy here is unreal, like a little portal into another world.

Açaí Dreams and Beach Days

We spent a lot of time near Dog Beach, and it’s also where Gus swears he found the best açaí bowl in the U.S.—and he's from Brazil, so that’s saying something! Cafe OB is affordable, fresh, and exactly what you need to recharge after a beach session. If you’re in OB, do yourself a favor and try one.

Now writing this from sunny, cold, and snowy Colorado, we’re seriously missing the warmth, sand, and vibes of Southern California. We spent three unforgettable months in San Diego, and OB will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Stay tuned for more stories from the road!
